ABSTRACT

The 1979 United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (the Women’s Convention) presents a new way of framing legal problems in Denmark. According to the Women’s Convention, women have the right to be included in society and to be active citizens on equal terms with men. This understanding of active citizenship differs from the traditional Nordic understanding, one generally confined to activities in the labour market and a subject to which this chapter will later return.
