ABSTRACT

Overview is chapter explains how test-based writing is a formulaic type of writing in contrast to the types of writing done in the real world. It denes the various types of essays found on Language Arts tests and demonstrates how an authentic writing agenda is the best test preparation for the types of essays found on examinations. A curriculum which is aimed only at essay-type articial academic essays is highly ineective as students do not have enough content to write about. Nor does a curriculum centered on “plot” and “theme” assist students to process literature deeply enough either for personal fulllment or for writing test-based essays. is chapter focuses on how to create an authentic writing curriculum which meets the needs of high-stakes tests, both in the literature essay and in the “block” essay.
