ABSTRACT

Truth commissions have been established in many countries to investigate gross human rights abuses, explain their causes, analyze their impact on society, and develop proposals to avoid repetition of abuse. In general, these are bodies of investigation set up by states in order to protect and enforce the rights to truth, justice, and reparations for victims. In some cases, they also have the objective of promoting reconciliation inside the society and are known as truth and reconciliation commissions.
