ABSTRACT

The stringers’ assertion of conservatism, however* is completely unfounded. An examination of the Salvadoran journalists’ life histories makes this evident. Several SPECA reporters filled positions in the Salvadoran government during failed reform attempts in the early 1980s. Each of these resigned or was fired when the reforms were defeated. Several worked in the local alternative press* including Catholic church radio and other media institutions closed down near the start of the war. Others worked in the mainstream media* but were forced out or resigned due to political differences with their right wing employers.
