ABSTRACT

Ballivor is a small village in County Meath. It lies at the edge of the bog that occupies much of the middle of Ireland. However, the village is surrounded on all other sides by good farming land. For most of its life, the village provided a center for the local farming community. It consists of one wide main street about half a mile long which includes three pubs, a couple of churches (one Catholic, one Protestant), a post office, a Credit Union, a mini-supermarket, a petrol station, a butcher, a greengrocer, two hairdressers, a pharmacy, a veterinary supply store, a bookmaker, a hardware shop and a home oil supplier. The local primary school is on the Mullingar Road on the outskirts of the village. The GAA club is on the Kinnegad Road. For most of its twentieth-century life, Ballivor had a population of about 300.
