ABSTRACT

Psychotherapy does not equal change. Change typically starts before therapy begins and change should continue after therapy ends. Change can occur without therapy and sometimes change fails to occur with psychotherapy. Given these facts, how therapy begins and ends is very important to whether change occurs and continues. Th is chapter will explore diff erent types of change in therapy and diff erent types of termination from the theoretical and empirical perspective of the stages of change. We will close with recommendations for optimizing change and termination from psychotherapy.
