ABSTRACT

Th e current chapter addresses termination issues unique to psychotherapy with older adults (defi ned as individuals over the age of sixty-fi ve). We will begin by orienting the reader to changes in demographics occurring in the United States that will demand that psychotherapists increase their understanding of the unique characteristics of conducting (and thus, terminating) psychotherapy with this population. Since the process of termination can diff er depending on the client’s presenting concern(s), the reader will then be introduced to common mental health concerns of the elderly. Finally, specifi c issues related to terminating psychotherapy are reviewed, including specifi c termination techniques, common themes and ethical dilemmas.
