ABSTRACT

Hawthorn High School sits in the very heart of its community. The surrounding streets are wide and the houses are typically large and set back from the pavements. Terraces of Victorian houses are interspersed with more modern terraces of less imposing, 1930s vintage. Housing patterns present a patchwork of styles: some well kept, some recently renovated while others appear as if they have been untouched since they were put there a century ago. The variety of cars which line the residential streets, parked where front gardens once were, also represent a mix – from the modest family saloon to the most recent showcase models, attesting to a community with a degree of affluence and ambition.
