ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the learning environment in which students undertake their learning activities to help teachers develop appropriate formative assessment and provide effective formative feedback. It is important to consider the learning environment in higher education from a student perspective. Often the expectations of students and teachers are very different – even when using the same activity as a starting point. It is often the case that the activities that are valued by students are not the same activities that are valued by academics or are not the activities that teachers expect students to value.
