ABSTRACT

Everyday memory does not only consist of a record of past events. As well as remembering what has happened in the past, we also use memory to encode our future or delayed intentions and plans. Most importantly, we need to remember to actually perform the intended actions, while memory is also involved in keeping track of ongoing actions and of the actions we intend to carry out in the future. This type of memory is known as prospective memory. Everyday memory research places a particular emphasis on memory functions and remembering to carry out daily tasks is one of the most basic of these functions. If this kind of memory is impaired, people can be severely compromised in their ability to live an independent life.
