ABSTRACT
To attach a precise date to the genesis of ‘Scottish Gothic’ is an enterprise as perilous as the dating of its neighbouring counterparts ‘English’ and ‘Irish’ Gothic. Instead, in this exploration of what may constitute Scottish Gothic, I have chosen to examine two particular episodes in Scottish history that in turn created a particularly fertile territory in Scotland for the development of a Gothic aesthetic.
