ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will consider how to build on the opportunities for engaging with non-fiction that children have experienced in Early Years settings and at KS1, as well as the knowledge and skills that they bring with them from their daily lives. At key stage 2 we need to extend children’s functional literacy to enable them to sort through and interpret the vast range of information that they encounter and to use spoken and written language as a tool that will empower them. Our aim should be to provide children with the skills that they need to become reflective and critical readers and creative writers.
