ABSTRACT

The term ‘kindergarten’ originated in the nineteenth century with Friedrich Froebel. The literal translation from the German ‘Kinder’ and ‘Garten’ is ‘children’s garden’; ‘garden’ in German is connected with the word that means ‘to bend’ (transform, metamorphose). Froebel used this concept as inspiration for the child’s environment, namely a ‘paradise garden’. It is a common term for early years education in many countries throughout the world.
