ABSTRACT

Geography is often considered one of the most difficult subjects for pupils with visual impairment. Using basic plans is probably the best way to start teaching pupils with visual impairment about maps. When the three-dimensional plan is complete, pupils can copy it to create a two- dimensional version, using card of the same shape as the blocks. Ordnance Survey (OS) mapping skills are difficult for pupils with visual impairment. Realistically, only a very small number of people with visual impairment will ever need to access OS maps. Once the basics of reading coordinates are learnt, pupils can progress to modified maps. Play matching activities such as ’snap’ with large print or tactile OS symbols. To introduce the relationship between a two-dimensional map and a globe, roll a tactile or large print map of the world into a cylinder and hold the ends together with paper clips.
