ABSTRACT

Pupils with visual impairment need more time to complete tasks. Either give pupils additional time to perform tasks or modify tasks so that less work is needed. Pupils with visual impairment often miss out on early number experiences in everyday life. Sighted pupils often use visual references to make estimates. Pupils will need plenty of opportunities to handle actual objects and to experience the practical application of number, especially if they cannot see clearly their representation by two-dimensional means. Enhance learning number shapes with tactile materials and three-dimensional numbers. There is a range of other useful equipment available from Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and other suppliers - a browse in the RNIB online shop and the suppliers listed in Directory of suppliers will reveal talking calculators, folding geometry shapes, clocks, specially designed mathematics activity kits and much more.
