ABSTRACT

Mime is often used when teaching modern foreign languages. Modern foreign language textbooks are often very visual with busy layouts. Features include maps, symbols, cartoons, fragmented page layouts, variable and small prints, cursive script, print in different colours and on different coloured backgrounds, punctuation and accents and photographs. For pupils with severe visual impairment, supplement mime with oral description. Pupils should have individual copies of flash cards in an appropriate format. Pupils with visual impairment should be taught visual language. When presenting materials on a whiteboard, read out what the reader are writing; sighted pupils may also benefit from this. Presenting and recording material in audio format is helpful for pupils with visual impairment. Many pupils with visual impairment have well developed memory skills and team games can take advantage of this, using the sight of one pupil and the oral and listening skills of a pupil with visual impairment to report back.
