ABSTRACT

In many ways, the Kinks were starting over. They had not had a top-ten hit in over four years (“Tired of Waiting for You,” May 1965) nor a toptwenty hit in three years (“Sunny Afternoon,” October 1966), and their last album to crack the top-100 was The Kinks Greatest Hits!, released in August 1966. Their lack of commercial success in the States can only partially be blamed on their absence. After his return from the disastrous 1965 American tour, Davies retreated into a distinctly English sensibility, one with little appeal to America’s increasingly radicalized youth. The Kinks may have made some of their best music during these years, but it went largely unheard in America.
