ABSTRACT
Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001) worked at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop1 and was famously responsible for the distinctive electronic arrangement of Ron Grainer’s theme tune for the television series Doctor Who,2 among many other things. She used tape loops, oscillators and early synthesisers to create music and soundtracks. She was a typical example of a technological musician, qualifi ed in music but making ‘special sounds’ derived from an understanding of sound through the science of acoustics, combined with a belief in the supremacy of aural perception and the brain in shaping music.
