ABSTRACT
Historically, in the western United States, mineral mining has been a temporary use of the land. After the economically recoverable minerals had been removed, the mines were abandoned, impacting the characteristics of the property. These changes in the property included wasterock piles, mineral-recovery processing wastes, and continuous discharges of acidic metal-laden water, known as acid mine drainage. They often result in adverse environmental or humanhealth impacts.
