ABSTRACT
Scholars examine the philosophical basis of human rights for several reasons. One is to demonstrate that respect for human rights has grown over time and has a solid foundation. A second reason is to note that there are contradictions within and across various human rights traditions, both religious and secular. The present chapter provides both contexts for understanding how human rights are perceived today.
