ABSTRACT

Social drinking is a ubiquitous part of American culture. Alcohol consumption in the United States has been consistently rising, with the most recent information from the National Institutes of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism indicating that, per capita, Americans consumed 2.20 gallons of ethanol from alcoholic beverages in 2002 (Lakins, Williams, Yi, & Smothers, 2004). For most drinkers, the majority of this alcohol was consumed in the company of others.
