ABSTRACT

One of the more frequent goals of everyday communication is to persuade another to comply with a request. The ability to seek compliance in a manner that is effective and contextually appropriate is an important aspect of communication competence. Such skills are often a necessary condition to the realization of broader goals in organizational, group, health, legal, and political contexts. Thus, it is not surprising that one of the larger bodies of research on interpersonal communication has focused on how persons seek compliance.
