ABSTRACT

The preceding three chapters examined each primary environmental feature on its own. We now consider some issues that are more general. For example, given that job characteristics do not operate in isolation, what is known about their combined influence on happiness? Measurement themes will also be examined and causal patterns explored through studies that follow employees across time. The chapter will then draw on the vitamin framework to suggest profiles of psychologically bad work and psychologically good work, which may be applied in practical as well as research situations. The main focus is on work as paid employment, but the profiles are also applicable to nonemployment activities of many kinds.
