ABSTRACT

Clinical research addressing the pre-psychotic or prodromal phase of illness has been conducted since the mid 1990s at a number of sites around the world. Initially the focus of this work was the development of valid and reliable criteria to identify individuals who were at heightened risk of psychosis. More recently, the emphasis has expanded to the development and evaluation of treatment to address the clinical needs of young people who meet high-risk criteria, with the aim of delaying or even preventing further deterioration and the onset of psychotic illness. This chapter describes the development of prepsychosis treatment approaches in Melbourne, Australia, Cologne, Germany and Manchester, United Kingdom.
