ABSTRACT

D uring the last year, both of Nancy's parents developed cancer. Her mother's was a relatively minor skin cancer, but her father's was terminal. Shortly before he lapsed into a coma, Nancy and her father talked about her childhood. Her father was genuinely surprised about her feelings of abandonment, and he reassured her of his love. Nancy also talked with her mother, who admitted that her preoccupations with friends and career when Nancy was a little girl were caused by her own unhappiness, not by a lack of love for, or a lack of interest in, Nancy.
