ABSTRACT

Broad interest in mental health and well-being has been spurred on by rising rates of psychological disturbance in young people. In order to reduce the number of young people with mental illnesses, and to provide support and services for those already af¯icted, the role of schools in enhancing social emotional development has been emphasized in many Western communities. In this chapter the role of schools in teaching coping skills is considered and one programme that has been developed in conjunction with the Adolescent Coping Scale is presented and evaluated. The presentation of the studies highlights the many groups of young people who can bene®t in different ways from participation in a coping skills programme.
