ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the relevance of an architect’s role within disaster risk management, but not in the context of designing emergency shelters or housing reconstruction as is often the case. Instead it focuses on the consideration of resilience during the early decision-making stages in the conventional building design process, as is experienced in most countries. The importance of designing built assets that are resilient to natural and human-induced hazards has really come to the fore in recent years and so it is appropriate to consider the role of the architectural profession in providing the resilient built environment that governments and others seek.
