BACKMANTLE An ETRUSCAN female garment (early seventh century BC, apparently a short-lived FASHION, disappears by the early sixth century): a long rectangular piece of material fastened to the shoulders, hanging down the back to the hem of the chiton; hair was worn in a single braid on top of the mantle.
