ABSTRACT

While other denominations are declining, evangelical Protestantism is growing. So much, in fact, that evangelicals are now the largest religious group in the United States, representing 36 percent of all practitioners (Symonds, 2005, p. 81). Much of this increase can be attributed to the success of seeker churches. These churches, also known as megachurches, now total more than 1,200, up from 600 since the turn of the millennium.1 Megachurches minister to more than 2,000 congregants but can serve as many as 20,000 to 30,000 people-or more-on a weekly basis. According to Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, “Megachurches that have grown the fastest report almost two-thirds of their members are involved in outreach and evangelizing their friends, family and neighbors” (Megachurches, 2006).
