ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we reinterpret classic empirical evidence that has been argued previously to support a theoretical distinction between short-term and long-term memory stores (STS and LTS, respectively) within a recencybased framework of episodic memory. Our discussion centres on the free recall and immediate serial recall tasks, from which, historically, measures of the recency effect and memory span respectively have provided some of the most important lines of empirical evidence in establishing the dichotomy.
