ABSTRACT

Most people get depressed from time to time. Disappointing things happen and we respond by feeling discouraged. In the majority of children, these “down” feelings are transient, and before you know it, they are back to being happy and engaged. Sometimes these negative moods become locked in, and the child is overcome by persistent sadness and hopelessness. In this chapter, we will look at three ways in which children deal with depression: by withdrawing, by becoming irritable and negative, and by a rollercoaster of up and down moods.
