ABSTRACT

In recent years sport’s role as a key form of physical activity in the battle against obesity and other forms of ill health has become more widely acknowledged by all policy sectors, including central government. Due to the mutual recognition of competence between sports development professionals and health care providers the current environment has demonstrated that their initial bureaucratic suspicions have abated. This chapter introduces key concepts in relation to sport, physical activity and exercise as well as updating the reader on political developments in sport and health discourses. Finally, the chapter maps out key stages in a transtheoretical model of behaviour change in relation to health promotion.
