ABSTRACT

One of the problems with sport is that everyone thinks they are an expert (of course in many ways they are) and experts know what is right. But get a few of these experts together and you are likely to find that they disagree about what it is, that there are gaps in their knowledge and that some of the things taken for granted as true are based on belief rather than evidence. What is needed to try to ensure that our policy and professional practice are well informed is good-quality research, but we are operating in an under-researched field.
