ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the nature of psychological trauma and the psychiatric syndromes that are triggered by it, as well the vulnerability of women to such disorders. In contrast to ``Acts of God'' such as natural disasters, personal and ``man-made'' events are perceived as being more traumatising (Breslau et al., 1998; Janoff-Boulmann, 1985).
