ABSTRACT

Most major book shops have a section on ``self-help'' for emotional, physical and behavioural problems and disorders, including books and other materials such as audio or video tapes, produced for the lay public with the aim of giving information and advice. The contents, style and quality of these publications vary hugely, but the many metres of shelf space devoted to them bear witness to the growing popularity of self-help approaches. Likewise, the internet is a rich and growing source of self-help advice and materials (Williams, 2003).
