Introduction

The aim of this book has been clearly set out to explore the practice of

technical design in architecture and to many, that process manifests

itself in the design of technical details – detailing. The fact that we have

needed 12 chapters to get this far is testament to themisconception that

it might be a simple process. This section will now examine the

approach to the design of technical details in depth, but it must be stated

again that this dissection of the various aspects of design is to a large

degree a false picture as the design process is a very complicated one

with many aspects occurring simultaneously.
