ABSTRACT

In what follows I shall first examine the interrelated notions of objectivity and

perspective introduced by Thomas Nagel. I shall then argue to the effect that

Nagel misidentifies the initial worldview from which scientific investigation of

reality starts. A correct localization of our epistemological starting point will

enable us, I shall explain, to assign art an important role in our attempts to cope

with the external world and our place in it. We shall see that art is continuous

with both common sense and science, and that it may even help to improve our

scientific understanding of reality.
