ABSTRACT

Gay Youth is critical to this history because of its early founding date, nationwide reach, diverse membership, journal, school outreach, dedication to gay liberation, and longevity. Initiated by Mark Segal in February 1970, GY was initially one of Gay Liberation Front’s many cells.1 After the dissolution of GLF, it was housed by churches, GAA, and the New York Mattachine Society. GY continued as an independent self-governing gay liberation group until about 1983 when it joined New York’s Lesbian and Gay Community Center and accepted adult oversight. Most recently known as BiGLTYNY (Bisexual, Gay Lesbian & Transgender Youth of New York), it seceded from The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center around 2000 and became affiliated with the Empire State Coalition of Youth and Family Services.2 BiGLTYNY maintains its Yahoo.com group registration, but the organization is no longer active.
