ABSTRACT
The subject explored in this chapter is the relationship between Marxism, as a body of theory, and the attempts that were made in the course of the twentieth century to utilize its insights to replace capitalism with socialism. It would clearly be impossible in the framework of a single chapter to provide a detailed examination of the diverse experiences that constitute the historical record of Marxist-inspired socialism in the twentieth century. Three broad historical facts, however, serve to inform what follows.
