ABSTRACT
The 1965 Immigration Act removed the racist shape that immigration and citizenship laws had gradually taken on over the previous century. This had a profound (and for almost all Americans unexpected) impact on American society. A great new wave of immigrants came to the United States, mainly from Latin America and from Asia. This great movement of new peoples, along with the civil rights revolution, made for the beginnings of new social relationships and a new system of ethnic hierarchy.
