ABSTRACT

Almost All Aliens is not organized according to strict chronology. The general movement of the book is from past to present, but this chapter, for example, overlaps the one that precedes it considerably with respect to the time periods to which they attend. Chapter 3 addresses the period 1760 to 1860, while Chapter 4 runs from 1830 to 1900. Rather than just chronology, each chapter highlights a particular theme or issue. Chapter 3 was about a connection between immigration and race, one of the topics promised in the book’s subtitle. That is, at its core it described the formation of the White race out of various immigrant peoples from Europe, with English-descended people holding the place at the unexamined center. Chapter 4 is mainly about the other connection in the book’s subtitle: between immigration and colonialism.
