ABSTRACT

Blyton, Dahl, Horowitz, Pullman, Rowling, Tolkien: these writers feature prominently on the children’s ction sections in bookshops in France in 2007. Characters from American comics and animated cartoon lms populate French children’s comics. Yet this apparent invasion of translations and adaptations may obscure, in the eyes of an Anglophone observer, the wealth of excellent material being produced by French writers today, and the complex history of children’s literature in France. e aim of this volume is to examine the development of French children’s books in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and at the beginning of the twenty-rst, in order to establish the richness and variety of a eld little known and little studied in Anglophone countries although the latter have been at the forefront of the study of children’s literature.
