ABSTRACT

In the following chapter, the EI approach is elucidated by three multicultural case illustrations: an examination of Latino psychospirituality, a perspective on African American liberation, and a reection on existentialism as personalism — a Native American perspective. In the rst illustration, on Latino psychospirituality, Lillian Comas-Díaz focuses on what she terms Latin American humanism. is philosophy is a synthesis of historical, political, and cultural inuences that have informed Dr. Comas-Díaz’s existential-integrative approach to Latino clients. In featuring her work with Mariana, Dr. Comas-Díaz shows how a culturally sensitive therapist can combine ritual, dream work, and cognitive-behavioral exercises with vibrant presence to promote healing and inner restoration.
