ABSTRACT

Considering how much music has come into the United States from the Caribbean, it seems odd how little has come from the rest ofCentral and South America. With the obvious exception ofMexico, most of the countries of Latin America have sent few musicians north, and even the Mexicans have tended to work only within immigrant communities. Brazil has certainly made an impression over the years, and since the 1960s there have been Andean groups from Peru and Bolivia playing for Anglo audiences, if only on sidewalks and in subway stations, but the vast range of Latin American music has remained surprisingly absent from the world music scene.
