ABSTRACT

The director was directing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and had a wonderful actor playing a role that he never quite got to grips with because he was also on a scholarship and needed to keep on the Dean's List. The actual achievements in university productions can be compromised by other factors. It is quite standard for potential professional actors to start off their training at a university, and, in the United States, in Acting 101. In Europe, however, it is more natural for the potential actor to go to a drama school or conservatory. The great advantage of a university course is that end up with a degree that can be essential for earning money in other related fields. Working in a university department and acting in the summer months in lieu of writing books or articles is a well-worn path for those who want to mix acting with a responsible life.
