ABSTRACT

The actor can immediately see, as can the director, the fellow actors can see and respond to it, and everyone gets much further on in the project with this approach than with the timid approach. A fully committed performance, if it is not appropriate, is easily spotted by the director, by their fellow actors. It is much better to discover things in rehearsal, where a deep level of performance can make apparent just what is required, and in no time flat. Actors have worried that if they commit too soon, they will sort of get stuck in whatever they have come up with, but the opposite is true. It is quite hard to change a sort-of-there performance, and it is very easy to change a full-blown performance. For example, if you are fully committed to a tongue-in-cheek performance, it is easiness itself to immediately change to a sincere one, if that is what is asked for in the rehearsal room.
