ABSTRACT

Improvisations are powerful tools, and when well used actor's can be really valuable, but they have to know when to use them and when not. Improvisations are used so much in training that it is important to remember that they are not always the necessary thing in professional work, where the time would probably be better spent in rehearsing the play. Make sure then that acting out the minute details of a whole day in actor's character's life will have visible results in their ultimate performance. The danger with using their own words is precisely that they will get a character and attitude from them, and then have to apply these to the author's words. Finding out why this particular improvisation is being done will enable actors to make sure it contributes to their creating the very best character they can for their potential audience.
