ABSTRACT

Microphone technique requires a unique skill because it almost completely excludes physical business and facial expression. In other words, it is all in the voice. The main advantage of radio is that we do not have to completely memorize our lines, but we do need to know them thoroughly. Now that radio plays are recorded in stereophonic or quadraphonic sound, the actors will be given distinct moves and directions to place the characters according to the microphone geography. If we really like the idea of acting for the microphone, whether on radio, for voice-overs, or for audiobooks, then persist with all the usual channels. Consonants can be added or removed by the sound engineer, for instance, and various technical tricks have been devised to make life easier for the actor. Some actors hold all their pages loose and some turn over pages that are stapled together, but now that cheaper paper is being used it is noisier.
