A Biopsychosocial Stress-and-Coping Theory of Forgiveness
In this chapter, I describe the elements of a stress-and-coping theory of forgiveness. Stress-and-coping theory (Lazarus, 1999) is well established. Thus, my tasks are threefold. First, I must describe how the process, from transgression to forgiveness, parallels the stress-and-coping theory. Second, I must elaborate the parallel process to show how unforgiveness-forgiveness requires specific nuanced modifications. I will do both in this chapter. Third, I must provide evidence that unforgiveness is indeed a stress reaction. I will do that in chapter 3.
