“When I first endeavored to write about African American cowboys, I must admit, secretly as a youngster, I frequently envisioned myself as a western hero. The fantasy of rescuing damsels in distress and saving a town from evil men has always intrigued me. In some small way I’m doing that now as I write about the heroics of African American pioneers and mountain men but especially the ‘cowboys’.

“When I visit classrooms across the country, it’s apparent my books are rescuing young African American boys and girls from the ignorance of not knowing that the American frontier was settled by people who looked like them. To see ourselves as heroes in the shaping of America is vital, in my view.”
